Portage De Sioux Power Plant

West Alton, Missouri

Project Overview

Beginning in 2005, Kolb Grading maintained the fly ash pond at the Portage De Sioux Power Plant, developing and implementing a strategy to keep the plant operational while generating several hundred thousand cubic yards of usable fly ash. Kolb built a bottom-ash main haul road through the pond, managed water flow and levels, excavated 600,000 cubic yards from the pond, dried, hauled, and placed over 300,000 cubic yards of fly ash, and constructed a 53,000-foot haul road supporting scrubber improvements.

Scope of Work

  • Created a main haul road through the pond with bottom ash
  • Installed pipes to allow water flow and level control
  • Created deeper and wider channels; excavated and dried fly ash, consolidating the underlying ash
  • Excavated, dried, hauled and placed over 300,000 cy of dry fly ash from pond to fills
  • Constructed a 53,000 ft haul road to support scrubber improvements
  • 600,000 cy excavated from the fly ash pond
