Our History
Family-owned. Built over generations.
People trust Kolb because they know where we came from.

In 1960, at the age of 20, Dave Kolb founded Dave Kolb Grading with his wife Janet, after spending his life around heavy equipment on his family’s farm. Dave ran the crews and managed projects in the field, while Janet kept the books, managed the bank relationships, and built the back office. Together they spent the next five decades building a team, a base of repeat customers, and a reputation for trustworthiness and on-time delivery, doing what it took to do the job right the first time.
Their children grew up in the business, learning early about the five requirements of a successful business: integrity, excellence, trust, quality, and performance. Today, that generation is now at the helm, Janet is still deeply involved in day-to-day operations, and a third generation is carrying the legacy forward, hands-on and committed to every project.
Kolb’s emphasis on family isn’t just limited to that of the founder. Many of our employees have family ties of their own, adding to a culture built on commitment, long-term relationships, and trust. The result is a business with an outstanding safety and project completion record, and an eye toward the future.

The story behind Kolb Grading
Dave Kolb founded this company in 1960 and ran it for nearly four decades while surviving five heart attacks, two heart transplants, and a long list of surgeries that should have forced him to stop. In this video, Jeff Kolb tells his father’s story and gives credit where Dave always put it: on the people around him, starting with his wife Janet, who managed the company’s books from day one and kept the doors open while he was in California for his first transplant.
