Ameren Missouri awarded Kolb Grading the general contract to close both the bottom ash and fly ash ponds at the Labadie Power Plant, the largest coal-fired plant in Missouri. The closure covered 278 acres and required excavating, drying, and capping ash that had accumulated over decades of operation.
Kolb excavated more than 1.7 million cubic yards of ash, at up to 15,000 cubic yards per shift, and dried and stabilized unsuitable material with quicklime. Crews installed nine 30-inch HDPE outfall pipes through the existing berm, placed 60-mil HDPE liner at up to 5 acres per shift, and brought in 425,000 cubic yards of clay and 400,000 cubic yards of topsoil for the final cover. The project logged 70,000 safe self-perform man-hours with zero injuries.
